Y-K Delta Teams Start Strong In First Day Of 1A State Basketball Tournament

Wednesday began the first day of the 1A Small Schools State Basketball tournament in Anchorage. KYUK has been live-airing the games featuring Y-K Delta teams and will continue to do so throughout the tournament. Here are the results from Wednesday's games:

The Kipnuk Falcons boys’ basketball team won their morning game against Tanana, 43 to 34. Kipnuk’s Keoni Aliraliria led the team by scoring 24 points, Jaden Anaver sunk 11 points, and Jessie Dock-Paul locked-in eight points. The Kipnuk boys will play again on Thursday at 5 p.m.

The Aniak Halfbreeds girls scored a massive victory over Hydaburg, 81 to 38. Aniak’s Shauna Koonuk led her team to victory with eight assists, eight rebounds, seven steals, and 26 points. Aniak’s Alyssa Morgan added 18 points, and Kayla Morgan 14 points. The Aniak girls move on to play last year’s runner-up, Selawik, on Thursday.

The Aniak boys team narrowly lost to Shishmaref, 61 to 57. Aniak lost its lead late in the final quarter when Shishmaref converted a three-point play and drilled a triple. Aniak’s Braden Dallmann sunk 19 points and snatched 12 rebounds, while Carl Morgan scored 14 points, and Billy Turner 12 points. On Thursday, Aniak faces Hydaburg at 8 a.m. in the consolation round.

The Alakanuk boys lost to Noatak, 83 to 30. Michael and Gregory Ayunerak each scored 10 points for Alakanuk.

The Scammon Bay girls won by a wide margin against New Stuyahok, 88 to 45. Scammon's Hayley Akerelrea scored 23 points, and Almira Kaganak 21 points. The team forced 21 turnovers and secured 16 steals.

The Scammon Bay boys team didn't fare as well. The boys lost to King Cove, 58 to 42. Scammon's Joe Uttereyuk scored more than half the team's points, sinking 24 total. Teammate Jackson Charlie contributed 11 points. Scammon Bay will compete against Alakanuk at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday in consolation.

The St. Mary's girls beat Kake, 53 to 39.

The Toksook Bay girls lost to King Cove, 53 to 28.
