The Bethel City Council agreed Tuesday to provide free water deliveries to Bethel Winter House, Bethel’s homeless shelter, for the remainder of their season.

Bethel city water trucks get more than their fair share of abuse, but after an incident that left a brand new water truck tipped on its side, the Bethel City Manager decided to change the accident policy to give city truck drivers who are found to be negligent tickets and drug tests.

Tuesday, the Bethel City council zoned Larson Subdivision as residential. Councilman Leif Albertson said that this was just the first part of a city-wide effort.

House Representative Fansler Checks In With The Delta

Just a month into the session, Zach Fansler, state House Representative for District 38, visited the YK Delta over the weekend to do a check-in with his constituency. On Saturday he spoke to a crowd of people in Bethel, and traveled to the nearby village of Napaskiak on Sunday. KYUK’s Adrian Wagner attended those meetings and has more.

At both meetings this weekend, Zach Fansler said that one of his goals at the legislature was to dispel the myth that Western Alaska is subsidized by urban Alaska.

When Zach Fansler ran for House District 38, he promised to represent the region’s mainly Alaska Native population. Now that’s he’s in office, he’s making good on that promise by choosing two Alaska Native women for his staff.

Zach Fansler was sworn in Tuesday as the new House Representative for District 38. After the ceremony, KYUK caught up with Fansler in his Juneau office.

Bethel's Vice Mayor, Bryon Maczynski, has announced that he will not be running for reelection next year because he’s moving to Dillingham. The 29-year-old Maczynski was born and raised in Bethel. He has served on the Public Works Committee during his three-year term, while at the same time working with his dad at their family-owned auto body shop.


Zach Fansler was sworn into the Alaska State Legislature on Tuesday, January 18. He is the State House Representative for District 38.
